Atlantic Satellite
GOES-19 view of the Atlantic • updated every 15 minutes
Weather that reaches Southampton usually starts out over the Atlantic. This American satellite (GOES-19) looks across the whole ocean from the other side, so you can watch lows and fronts organise days before they arrive. The UK sits at the far right edge of the picture, where the view is very oblique, so use this page for the big picture and our European satellite pages for the detail.

What Each Band Shows
GeoColor is a natural colour view by day and an infrared night view by night. Visible is a daylight-only grey picture with the finest detail. Infrared and Shortwave IR show cloud temperature day and night, and the shortwave view is good for fog and low cloud. Water vapour shows moisture in the upper air, so dry slots and the jet stream show up clearly.
